The bot’s avatar is a portion of the cover of the March 1982 edition of “The Unesco Courier”, designed by Louis Bnat. (The scan of the credits page is not clear and I may have misspelled the artist’s name.) The title of that issue is “Swords to Plowshares”, a common theme in ADN discussion. I like the transition of the stylised art from black and white repetitive weapons and armaments to a brightly coloured variety of items which benefit humanity.
The header is l’Evocation de la paix by José María Sert (1874-1945), painted in the Council Chambers at the Palais des Nations in Geneva in 1936. The Palais des Nations presents an online gallery of the many artworks in the building. This is in some senses a more traditional and straightforward presentation of the “Swords to Ploughshares” imagery, and this piece is one of several which Sert painted for the building.
